ith the recent unveiling of the splendid Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed Royal Westmoreland Golf Club, the tradition of golf is strong in Barbados. Fully opened in 1995, this international class golf course features a former limestone quarry and sugarcane plantation, which Jones used imaginatively in carving the Quarry and Ridge nines. Indeed, the sixth green is surrounded by attractive yet unforgiving stone. Another tremendous challenge can be the forest/jungle, but Jones was 'nice' enough to add a few bunkers to 'save' players from reaching those unplayable lines. A major attribute of the course is its stunning par-3s. Ireland's Eamonn Darcy, the man who sunk the winning putt in the 1987 Ryder Cup, has called them the best he has played. The 3rd is modeled after the famous Redan Hole in North Berwick, Scotland. (Keep an eye out for the monkeys that often sit on the coral rocks beside the green!) The 7th plays across a water-filled quarry pit to a shallow green fronted by a large outcropping of white limestone. Even more delightful are the par-5s, all of which can be reached with two fine shots. That sets up the type of risk-reward scenario that establishes top-flight courses. Even the 13th, which is 600 yards off the tips, and a hearty 567 yards from the blues, is reachable due to the ever-present trade winds. Royal Westmoreland is a challenging, exciting course you do not want to miss playing.Credit Cards Accepted
