The Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow was born on January 21st 1920, died on June 1st 1987, and was a social activist and the political leader of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP). He was a great influence on the people of Barbados, and left a huge historical impact on the country. Mr Barrow fought for a better Barbados, not only by taking the country into independence and breaking away from Britain, but also implemented many reforms that made the island more economically stable and less dependent on outside resources.
These reforms expanded and strengthen the island’s infrastructure in the tourism industry and industrial sector. Errol Barrow Day in Barbados
This national holiday is a time used to reflect on Errol Barrow’s massive contribution to the country, and to celebrate his memory and immeasurable achievements. On this day Barbadians also commemorate the birth of Mr Barrow, in addition to acknowledging the stamp he left on the history pages of Barbados.
On January 21st 1989 Errol Barrow Day was declared a national holiday, and every year since then, bajans have celebrated the anniversary through a cross-section of activities and events.
Originally political divisions hindered the celebration of this Bank Holiday, causing it to only be recognized by DLP followers and the Barrow family. In recent years bajans of all political persuasions have embraced the day and can be seen celebrating on Bus excursions, island tours, and at several picnic spots, parks and beaches across the island.
Other special Errol Barrow Day celebrations, traditions and customs include playing cricket and road tennis, attending the St John Carnival, the Naniki Jazz Festival or the Mount Gay Round Barbados Sailing Regatta. A special treat on this day is sitting at home and proudly watching the endless video clips on television that shows us what a visionary this remarkable man was.
However, the official celebrations to mark the birthday of the late Errol Walton Barrow consist of a week of activities, educating the public on the important role he played in our society. The week-long events are organized by the DLP and comprise of a church service and luncheon, the Errol Barrow Memorial Lecture & Award Ceremony at the Frank Collymore Hall, and a Lunchtime lecture in the Errol Barrow Gallery at the DLP headquarters.
The main highlight of the annual week of activities is the popular Errol Barrow Day Scenic Bus Ride which visits a number of historic political sites across the island. The bus ride usually begins at Independence Square around 9am, and is customarily followed by an After-Party at Brandons Beach.
