uilt by the notorious buccaneer Samuel Hall Lord in the 1820s, Sam Lord's Castle is a beautiful Georgian mansion and one of the finest mansions in Barbados.Legend has it that Sam Lord (1778- 1844) acquired his vast wealth by plundering 22 ships. He hung lanterns out at night in the coconut tress so that passing mariners thought they had reached the safe port of Bridgetown. As the ships attempted to approach the land they ran aground on the treacherous reefs at Cobbler’s Reef in front of Castle Beach. They were then looted and the booty stored in tunnels under the Castle.
However the existence of the tunnel leading from the beach to the castle, filled with treasure, has never been proved.
The mansion's 19th century grandeur has been meticulously preserved over the years and the castle's fine architecture, chandeliers, plaster work ceilings, massive gilt-framed Regency mirrors, and period furniture have all been restored and maintained. Some of Sam Lord's antiques including his sofa and pieces of his dinner service are on display.
Sam Lord's Castle is located in the south eastern part of Barbados in the parish of St. Philip on a mile long beautiful sandy beach with spectacular views.
