Old timers would remember when the west coast was considered too hot to inhabit. Yet the 360-acre Sandy Lane estate was the first large tract to be converted from sugar plantation to tourism use when the famous hotel was conceived, along with its golf course and estates, in the mid-20th century. It is now world-renowned.

Ronald Tree, a close friend of Sir Winston Churchill, was the driving force. He first visited Barbados in the 1940s, when tourism had just begun here. Tree felt that the island would benefit economically from developing a tourist industry, and set about building a property that would attract the travelling elite of those days. He also began what became the Barbados Family Planning Association and founded the Barbados National Trust.

Named for a beloved Van Morrison song, Moon Dance is a beautiful update of an older Sandy Lane property called Sun Holm. The front view, the materials and some of the details give a nod to the classic plantation house, but otherwise it is entirely modern with a breezy, open feel.

Moon Dance was designed by Ron Crebbin who, in addition to his architectural career, plays banjo in two jazz bands—The Crustaceans and VSOP. He will be on-site to answer questions.

In keeping with the musical elements of this house, David Hutchinson of Pangroove Entertainment will play steel pan during the afternoon.

The Lively Lecture will take place at 3 pm and the speaker is Miguel Pena, General Manager of the Barbados National Trust.

Moon Dance is set in two acres of lovely gardens, where an array of the island’s finest craftspeople will display their work. Starring among them on January 17 will be Exclusive Cottons of the Caribbean, who will do a presentation on West Indian Sea Island Cotton, a.k.a. WISIC. (Hint: It’s the world’s best, and we grow it here.)

Alanna Grant’s Anna Rose Designs will also be featured. The young designer describes her aesthetic as “urban/resort”, and works primarily in cotton and linen.

Please follow the parking directions of Barbados National Trust volunteers at Moon Dance.

From Highway 1 (the west coast road) turn inland at South Road and follow Open House signs. From the south, South Road is beyond the turning to Holders Hill and into the stretch of old trees. From the north, it’s beyond Holetown and just past Sandy Lane Hotel.

Please follow the parking directions of Barbados National Trust volunteers at Moon Dance.
