BLEAK HOUSE, Indian Ground, St Peter

Bleak House was built in 1860, and its history suggests that it took its name from Charles Dickens’ 1853 novel. In 1983 it was bought as a burnt-out shell and rebuilt in classic Georgian style with innovative practicalities and a guest cottage. Now the home of Richard Goddard and Margaret Deutsch, Bleak House stands on 166 acres overlooking the Scotland District and still functions as a working farm. Its antique furnishings go back to the 15th century..

Directions
Go north on Highway 2A. Shortly after the sign to Black Bess Quarry, turn right towards Indian Ground.
Go left at the fork in the gully, and right at the T junction.

FEBRUARY

February 7th 2018
FUSTIC HOUSE, Clinketts, St Lucy

Fustic House is one of the most distinctive and magical of the transformations created on Barbados by the English theatrical designer, Oliver Messel. The new film “A Caribbean Dream,” based on Midsummer Night’s Dream, was shot here, for good reason. Get a preview today and meet the writer/director! Besides the two-part house, there’s a delightful cottage, and the conference/entertainment pavilion. The overall ambience and the little details all merge to create an atmosphere of unparalleled elegance and tranquillity. With 11 acres of park-like grounds, you’ll want to walk a lot.

Directions
Go north on Highway 2A to St. Lucy’s parish church. Take the 90-degree left at the roundabout, so that the church car park is on your immediate right. Stay on that road for about 2 km. As you enter Checker Hall, look for the Fustic Village sign on your left, and for our Open House sign too.

NEWLANDS HOUSE, Pine Hill, St Michael

Fine houses in a near-urban setting have their own special charm and reveal another Barbadian way of life. Newlands, the official residence of the Central Bank Governor, is a fine example. Set in the comfortable sylvan suburb of Pine Hill, it is furnished with antiques, some of which came from historic Wildey House. It also reflects the more contemporary artistic flair of its occupants, and its garden is a lovely place to explore and relax.

Directions
From Emancipation statue (Bussa) roundabout on ABC Highway, head towards Bridgetown; At the second set of traffic lights, bear left and turn right at the roundabout.  The house is across the road from St. Winifred’s school; however, parking will be on the empty lot next to Belmont funeral home. Follow our parking signs.  A shuttle will be available or you can take a five-minute stroll.
