n Barbados, the SANDY LANE GOLD CUP is one of the biggest sporting events on the island, and the most prestigious race on the Eastern Caribbean horse racing calendar.
The Gold Cup was originally sponsored by Cockspur Rum from its inception in 1982, until the Sandy Lane Hotel Resort took over sponsorship in 1997.
The Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup Festival attracts many visitors from all over the world, and comprises of a series of events and activities leading up to the big race day.
For many years the gold cup race has been attracting local and regional jockeys, as well as top international jockeys and trainers, with thoroughbred horses entered from North America and the UK. Some of these international entries are owned by some of the world’s leading investors in thoroughbred racing.
On Sandy Lane Cup race day the atmosphere is carnival-like with lots of pre-race cultural entertainment and is covered by international television networks worldwide.
