Emancipation Statue

The Emancipation Statue better known as the ?Bussa Statue? or the ?Emancipation Monument? was erected on March 28th 1985 by the government and people of Barbados to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery and the emancipation of Barbadians from the institution of slavery.

This Emancipation Statue was sculpted by Mr Karl Broodhagen who used Bussa a rebel slave, proudly breaking his chains of oppression to represent the pride felt to break away from slavery.

On the base of the statue there are extracts from a poem written by Barbadian poet Kamau Brathwaite and a Barbadian emancipation folk song.

The Emancipation Statue can be seen at the Haggatt Hall roundabout in St Michael.
