A PUBLICATION OF BRIDGETOWN CRUISE TERMINALS INC.
Welcome to the Bridgetown Cruise Terminal |
Diversity is found in all spheres of Barbados. The east and thewest of the island are both beautiful but in entirely different ways, so much so that they could be aspects of two countries instead of one. Picture the west - placid and calm, with the white beaches of picture postcards and coconut palms to complete the dream. The east, on the other hand, is more dramatic with huge boulders, windswept palms, brownish sand dunes, clay-streaked hills and a majestic Atlantic ocean. The North and the South East are also known for their rugged, picturesque landscape. In the south, the ocean appears slightly livelier than in the west but many of its beaches are also magnificent.
The interior of the country has its beauty as well. The lush green of the St. George Valley makes a pretty photo, especially where a plantation can be seen nestled in the flourishing sugarcane or a lion of coral stone can be seen perched on a grassy hill.
Barbados is rich in attractions which appeal to the nature lover. Chief among them is Harrison's Cave, with its stalactites, stalagmites, crystal-clear streams, pools and waterfalls - Barbados' number one attraction.
Nearby is the Welchman Hall Gully, with ancient trees and exotic vegetation providing a fascinating, if eerie, setting. Andromeda Gardens and Flower Forest are two other botanical gardens known for their beautiful blooms and eye-catching scenery. To enjoy natural surroundings combined with a historical and agricultural viewpoint, join one of the very popular hikes organized by the Barbados NationalTrust or set out on an adventure with Highland Outdoor Tours.
There is little Barbados does not offer in sport on land and at sea. Cricket reigns supreme in this country, and visitors should not miss the opportunity to catch this unique game played at the highest level between the West Indies and a visiting Test team, usually in the early part of the year. Sports such as tennis, squash, polo, volleyball, soccer, horse-racing, running and rugby are all available.
Barbados has excellent conditions for surfing and windsurfing, and some of the best in the world participate in the competitions held here every year as part of the international amateur and professional circuit. Yachting is also of a very high standard and Barbados hosts the Mount Gay Regatta annually. Indiv' uals can
derive their own pleasure from the water through swimming, skiing, diving, sailing and parasailing.
For your brief ocean journey off the coast of Barbados, there are many vessels from which to choose. On a daytime cruise, you might delight in the frivolity of a full Jolly Roger Pirate ship, or prefer the more exclusive but equally enjoyable ride of catamarans. In the evening, opt for the romanticism of the Bajan Queen riverboat. For those who do mind a little boating, but are not experienced in diving, there is a special treat at day or night - the Atlantis 11 submarine. A launch takes you to the submarine, after which you should be prepared for 50 minutes of pure fantasy as schools of fish pass by, which sea fans wave from various species of coral. To add to the mystery of the deep is a sunken vessel. If you are lucky, you may even see a turtle or a barracuda! This adventure is real, not man-created, so anything is possible.
Entertainment on land is no less fascinating. Our dinner theatre should not be missed; the "Plantation Tropical Spectacular" at the Plantation Restaurant, " 1627 and all that" and an exciting dance show at the Barbados Museum are prime examples. Enjoy the blend of cuisine, culture and comedy also to be found in our spectacular restaurants.
Indeed, Barbados offers a bit of everything, something for everyone. Come, let us show you why they say that there is "Never A Dull Moment" on our island.
